FDS Provides Complete Fire Safety Solution For Saffron Square
Fire Design Solutions (FDS) has designed, supplied and installed its highly effective smoke ventilation and corridor environmental systems to Berkeley Homes’ Saffron Square development.
Situated in the heart of Croydon, the 43 storey Saffron Square development offers contemporary residential apartments, convenient transport links into London and landscaped rooftop gardens.
Appointed directly by M&E contractor A&J Ryan Mechanical Services Ltd, FDS designed and supplied mechanical smoke ventilation and corridor environmental systems, as well as a complete installation and commissioning service.
Due to the scale of Saffron Square, mechanical smoke ventilation systems were recommended, due to the greater efficiency they offer over natural smoke ventilation systems. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modelling was used to illustrate how the planned systems would control the movement of heat and smoke in the event of a fire.
Berkeley Homes constructed a single 1m2 smoke shaft that serves all 43 floors into which FDS fitted a louvered damper at each level. An Automatic Opening Vent (AOV) door was also installed on the 1st floor to supply air in the event of a fire, with an AOV window on each floor from the 2nd to 43rd storey.
FDS’ expert team has also been awarded the contract to carry out ongoing service and planned preventative maintenance to ensure optimal operation in the event of a fire.
