Royal Sea Bathing Hospital

Royal Sea Bathing Hospital Residential Development, Margate, Kent

The development of the Grade II listed Royal Sea Bathing Hospital into residential flats comprises the conversion of the existing hospital building together with a series of new buildings on the site and the provision of three underground car parks over two levels.

The first phase of the car park consists of two levels of car parking referred to as upper basement level and lower basement level with approximate floor areas of 1500m² each. Each level is split into two sub levels. The upper basement level is accessed at street level by a car ramp. Each of the levels is served by stair cores which provide both access and egress to the open courtyard above.

Fire Design Solutions provided a code based ducted mechanical ventilation system within the car park that allows acceptable environmental conditions in the car park and assists fire fighters in their operations. The system satisfies the requirements of the building regulations, complying with the two necessary codes - 'Approved Document B' (ADB) for smoke clearance requirements and 'Approved Document F' (ADF) for environmental conditions.

In order to assist with CO ventilation and also to improve energy efficiency the car park was provided with a CO detection system. Fire Design Solutions also provided the fire alarm detection system utilising heat detectors throughout.
