Fire Design Solutions in line for an awards hat trick!

Leading fire engineering and fire safety systems contractor, Fire Design Solutions (FDS), has been chosen as a finalist in three categories at the highly regarded Fire Excellence Awards 2009.

FDS was shortlisted in the esteemed Fire Safety Equipment Installer category and the Fire Safety Engineering Project Design category, for its work at Oxygen - an award-winning development of 240 one, two and penthouse apartments situated within "the golden Olympic triangle". Judges were also impressed with its work on the AL Asima project in Kuwait City, for which it has been shortlisted in the Fire Safety Engineering category.

On completion of a full fire consultancy programme at Oxygen, FDS was awarded the contract to design, install and commission its advanced Fan Assisted System (FAS) and impulse car park venting system.

At Oxygen, despite a 50% reduction in the working programme, FDS value engineered the scheme to provide significant cost and design benefits - while still delivering on time and within budget.

By allowing extended travel distances of 20.2m between shafts, the FAS allowed FDS to justify the removal of one stairway through the height of the building. Furthermore, the number of AOV shafts was reduced from three to two, with a shaft area of just 0.5m2. With the additional floor space, main contractor Fitzpatrick upgraded apartments from one bedroom to two, realising approximately £1.2million.

This latest recognition is testimony to FDS's expertise in fire safety system design and installation. Winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner on Tuesday 12th May at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole.
